Build a Compost Bin for Almost Nothing!

One of the quickest ways to build a compost bin, also happens to be one of the cheapest. Shipping pallets are widely available and can usually be obtained for free. The basic design uses 4 pallets, one for each side making up the box and if soggy soil is a problem ( not really the case at Elgin Garden) one on the bottom

The pallets can be fastened together with wire or screws.  The front can be fixed with hinges and latches so garden waste can be added easily.

1/4″ to 1/2″ chicken wire can be used underneath and around the sides to keep rodents out.  Rodents like to hide in places that are quiet and not near where people are about. Rodents are a part of city life but we can reduce the possibility of a rodent problem by avoiding putting certain items (food waste) in the compost bin.

There are disadvantages : The wood will rot over time and have to be replaced.  It doesn’t have the most pleasing aesthetics, but it does cost almost nothing!
